Early intervention support class

Early Intervention Support Class

The Early Intervention Support Class provides a preschool program for children with a confirmed disability. The class offers a support program for young children who have a disability to promote their development and inclusion in the community.

What is Acorn Cottage?

Our early intervention support class is called Acorn Cottage. Acorn Cottage provides individualised learning programs in collaboration with families and other service providers. Classes usually run for 2.5 hours with each child attending either 2 or 3 sessions per week.

How do I apply?

Acorn Cottage is for children from the southern highlands, not just Moss Vale and entry into the class is by application. An access request is made early in the year (around June) before your child starts school and a vacancy may not immediately be available so please contact us as early as possible.

Referrals

Referrals maybe made by

  • the child's parent or carer
  • other professionals with the permission of the child's parent or carer

Access request process

Access to Acorn Cottage is through the access request process.

An access request is usually arranged by the school learning and support team at the local public school, but can also be organised through the local School Service team for students who are not yet enrolled. Local teams can be contacted on 131 536 and calls can be made from anywhere in NSW.

Access request forms are submitted to a placement panel. Parents are notified by letter if they have been offered a position for their child or if an offer is not able to be made.

Offer is made

Once a child has been offered an early intervention program, arrangements relating to class times or resource support timetables are organised by the school staff in consultation with the child's family and other agencies.

Travel

Some children may be eligible for travel support services which are provided by the department to assist students who may otherwise not be able to access the class program. Please talk to the Principal about this when you apply.

Contact us

If you are concerned about your child’s development and would like to discuss if Acorn Cottage might be suitable for your child, please call the school to discuss your child’s needs and bring any paediatrician reports with you to see what we can offer.
