When to start school
Your child can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn five on or before 31 July in that year. By law, all children must be enrolled in school by their sixth birthday.
When your child starts school is an individual decision. You may wish to discuss this with your child's preschool teacher, carer, doctor or your local primary school.
If your child attends a preschool or childcare centre, the school can work with the to help get to know your child and for you and your child to get to know the school.

Moving to high school?
How to apply for our opportunity class
Opportunity classes are one of the ways that the department supports high potential and gifted students. These are students who learn faster and more easily than others.
It is a two-year program from Year 5 to 6. Parents and carers cannot apply for Year 6 placement only.
You can apply even if our school is outside your local enrolment area. Enrolment is by application only. Students must sit the placement test to be offered a place.
We offer an equal number of places for girls and boys. Learn more at Gender parity model
When to apply
Applications are now closed for opportunity class entry in 2027
There is no late application period. If you have a question about your current application, please visit Selective high schools and opportunity classes. You can also send a message to the Selective Education Team in your application dashboard.
Applications usually open in early November (when students are in Year 3) and close in February the next year. You can choose up to 4 schools to apply to.
